PMMA Substrates
Poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a transparent thermoplastic whose monomer is methyl methacrylate (MMA), also known as acrylic and plexiglass. It is a commonly used material in microfluidic systems, especially disposable chips, because of its low price, hard mechanical properties, excellent optical transparency, and compatibility with electrophoresis. PMMA is also easy to fabricate and modify, and can be used to replicate high-resolution microfluidic chips in different structures such as PDMS or stainless steel. In addition, there are several methods available for sealing PMMA-PMMA substrates, such as solvent bonding, thermal bonding, adhesives and chemical bonding, to facilitate the construction of microfluidic chips. Thus, PMMA has been used as a substrate for a large number of microfluidic devices, including hybrid analyzer chips, DNA sequencers, and electrophoresis chips.

Tips:
- PMMA can be used with aqueous solutions, aldehydes, amines, oils and fats.
- PMMA cannot be used with concentrated acids and bases, alcohols, esters, ketones, aromatics, halogenated hydrocarbons.
